Welcome to Kalevala: Getting into the Finnish National Epic

In 1849, the medical doctor and folklorist Elias Lönnrot published the  work for which he would be immortalized, the literary epic Kalevala. Based  on traditional poetry collected by Lönnrot and other early folklorists  and modified into a linear narrative, this book is the best-known work  of Finnish literary art, which has served as an inspiration for  musicians, sculptors, painters, and even politicians in search of a  unique Finnish culture separate from Swedish and Russian influences. 

Our speaker, Hilary-Joy Virtanen, PhD, Assistant Professor of Finnish & Nordic Studies at Finlandia University in Hancock, MI,  will talk about what exactly Kalevala is and what  inspired its creation. Together we will look at the folk traditions from which it  drew as well as the snowball of Finnish nationalism that resulted from  its publication. 

From well-loved symphonies to Finnish independence  itself, the Kalevala's lasting influence over Finnish society and culture is undeniable.
